The Anointing & Worship

The anointing of God, His presence and our awareness and response to it - has little if anything to do with the quality of the music. If quality of music were the standard for the anointing then people would get touched by God listening to Beastie Boys or any philharmonic orchestra (not to limit God as He can & does use as He wills) and no one could ener into worship when lead by a self taught guitarist who only knows 3 chords. God’s gifts & call are without repentance but the anointing is to do with how we have gone through the tough things in life and how we responded. The more we have allowed God to expose damages parts, agreed with His view of them, and given over control to Him recieving healing.

The heart and character carry the anointing, the anointing does not carry or make up for lack of character and a wrong heart attitude. We can quench the spirit and grieve Him by getting into strife when it becomes about ‘me’, and He will quietly, sometimes unnoticed, withdraw. This happens in our daily life but is magnified when we get together to worship.

God wrote in the Bible, “Out of the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks’. When you play your intrument you are ’speaking’. When you sing your spirit is speaking in the song whatever you are carrying in your spirit.

John 4:23 - But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him.

Rom 8:5 - For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh, but they that are after the spirit the things of the Spirit.

Being good at your instrument enables you to be more creative (that comes from you and your gift) it does not increase your anointing (that is from God). Your heart attitude can do more damage in worship than bad playing - the things of the spirit are spiritually discerned. Sometimes people can’t say why they were ill at ease with the worship but their spirit was affected. If the playing is bad technically, it makes it hard to get past your feelings about it but it is possible to find God’s presence.

1 John 2:27 -  But the anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him.

To honour God in worship we have to first submit our lives and characters to Him, our attitudes and reactions. We truly have this treasure - His indwelling presence - in earthen vessels and we need to be careful, afraid (in awe) even of how we deal with it.
